Back a few years ago in college a few buddies and I started a whiskey club that met every Monday night. Each week you had to bring a different brand of whiskey. Now there were a few individuals that were all about the Canadian but I however am a American whiskey man. JD to be exact.
One question we always had and multiple arguments was the bourbon and should it be considered a whiskey enough to make our little club each Monday. Mainly because we had a certain individual who was cheap and Jim Beam is rather smooth and is very inexpensive.
In my humble opinion is that bourbon is a bourbon and not an whiskey. Now the article I have linked below will pretty much shoot my words and my opinion back at me , however I am still a firm believer that bourbon is totally different in taste and should not be considered a whiskey or whisky if you are from Canada.
Now really I haven't much evidence to support my claim but I do have many years and have drank about all the bourbons and whiskeys on the market , even the high end stuff and have always come to the same conclusion, whiskey is great bourbon sucks but both will get you drunk enough to never want to drink it again.

My reasoning is simple and fairly lame. I like Southern Comfort and the thought of whiskey makes me want to hurl. So there you have it, bourbon is not whiskey...or is whiskey not bourbon? Okay, I'm confused.. they are different - let's leave it at that!
Technically speaking we are both probably wrong, but oh well!
cheers.
As we share the same great name, I would like to also agree with your opinion! I likewise do not have any particulars supporting this knowledge other than I do enjoy a great JD.
